Title
4th scientific expedition in Sigulda
Description

4. zinātniskā ekspedīcija

The fourth scientific expedition to the Sigulda district in 1950. The collection consists of folklore and related materials, gathered at collective farms and the Līgatne paper mill—more than a century-old factory. Consequently, a rich material of workers’ stories and factory folklore was collected, including an impressive autobiography. Overall, it was also one of the most successful expeditions in terms of Soviet folklore—the latter accounted for about 20 percent of about 5000 units collected. For the first time during an expedition, photos were taken, and it was also the first expedition having a visiting session of the IF scientific council, represented in materials of the collection. Bulletin-board newspapers acquired a lot of attention as a source of folklore during this expedition. The collection also includes a good variety of evidence of the Midsummer celebrations, a theme that was ignored as un-Soviet the next year.
